Symantec Antivirus® Software

Symantec AntiVirus software is available for free to Wayne State University students, faculty, and staff. Campus workstations and servers are protected, as well, under this software contract.

Symantec AntiVirus software has up-to-the-minute protection with virus definition update capability. For more information about Symantec AntiVirus, visit the Symantec Website at www.symantec.com.

Symantec AntiVirus License Pricing, Distribution, and Use

FREE! All Wayne State students, faculty, and staff are allowed to use Symantec AntiVirus free of charge.

Use of the software for students is permitted:

  • On one personal computer (Windows or Macintosh)

Use of the software for employees is permitted:

  • On hardware owned or leased by Wayne State and located on the Wayne State University premises
  • On home computers as long as the employee is the primary user (at least 80 percent) of a campus workstation

When students or employees leave Wayne State University, they are no longer entitled to use Symantec AntiVirus software. The software must be removed from the students'/employees' computer.

IMPORTANT INSTALLATION INFORMATION

  • We highly recommend that you have a high-speed connection for the download.
  • You will need your WSU AccessID and password to download the application software.

Windows

Version 10.1 for Windows 2000 / XP only -

For full protection, this installation process requires that you install both the application and the patch and restart your computer three times.

The procedure is as follows:

  1. Download Symantec AntiVirus 10.1 for Windows (27.6 MB).
    1. Save it to your desktop, BUT
    2. DO NOT RUN it.
    3. Close the download dialog box.
  2. Download the Windows version 10.1 patch (3.1 MB).
    1. Save it to your desktop, BUT
    2. DO NOT RUN it.
    3. Close the download dialog box.
  3. Uninstall any antivirus software currently on your computer
    1. Click Start, Control Panel and then Add or Remove Programs.
    2. Find the anti-virus program currently installed (such as other versions of Symantec, Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky), highlight them, and click Remove.
  4. Restart your computer.
  5. Run the Symantec_AntiVirus_10.1_Win installer program you put on your desktop.
  6. When the installation is complete, restart your computer.
  7. Run Symantec_AntiVirus_10.1_patches_Win you put on your desktop.
  8. When the installation is complete, restart your computer.
  9. Schedule routine antivirus updates with LiveUpdate.
To make sure that you have the patch installed correctly, check the version number:
  1. Open Symantec AntiVirus on your computer.
  2. The version number will be displayed. The correct version is 10.1.0.401

Macintosh

Version 10.0 for Mac OS X 10.3 or later —

The procedure is as follows:

  1. Uninstall any antivirus software currently on your computer.
  2. Download Symantec AntiVirus for Macintosh 10.0 (26.1 MB)
  3. Schedule routine antivirus updates with LiveUpdate.
