Salford Data Mining Software
Wayne State University has purchased a site license for Salford's Data Mining software products. This software is available to Wayne State's faculty, staff, and students. The following Salford products are included in the license:
CART - Decision Tree Software
CART, a tree-structured statistical analysis and data mining software tool used to search for and find important data relationships otherwise hidden in data. The product is designed for both technical and non-technical business users alike.
Its proven methodology is characterized by: a reliable pruning strategy,a powerful binary split search approach, and automatic self validation procedures. Surrogate splitters intelligently handle missing values, adjustable misclassification penalties help avoid the most costly errors, andalternative splitting criteria make progress when other criteria fail.

MARS - Predicitive Modeling Software
MARS (Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines) is an innovative, flexible modeling tool that automates the building of accurate predictive models for continuous and binary dependent variables. It excels at finding optimal variable transformations and interactions, the complex data structure that often hides in high-dimensional data. This approach to regression modeling effectively uncovers important data patterns and relationships that are difficult, if not impossible, for other methods to reveal. MARS approaches model construction more flexibly, allowing for bends, thresholds, and other departures from straight-line methods.
TreeNet - Stochastic Gradient Boosting Software
TreeNet is designed for very high accuracy predictive modeling. TreeNet models are typically composed of hundreds of small trees, each of which contributes just a tiny adjustment of the overall model. TreeNet is appropriate for situations in which predictive accuracy is favored over interpretability and is suitable for constructing predictive models after exploratory analyses have been conducted with CART or MARS.
RandomForests
Random Forests represents a newly-developed data analysis tool for data mining and predictive modeling. It generates and combines decision trees into predictive models and displays data patterns with a high degree of accuracy.
Leo Breiman’s latest data mining technology, is based on learning ensembles of CART trees. By judiciously injecting randomness into the tree building process and then combining hundreds of these trees, RF is able to deliver high performance predictive models and a variety of novel exploratory data analysis results. RF also incorporates new metric free CLUSTER analyses that automatically select the variables used to define each cluster, with potentially different variables defining each cluster.

Salford License Distribution and Use
University personnel who are eligible to obtain Salford licensing include:
- Full and part-time faculty and staff
- Full and part-time students
Use of the software is permitted only:
- On hardware owned or leased by Wayne State, located on Wayne State University premises.
- On home computers and laptops of WSU faculty, staff or students for work-related purposes.
Each license purchased entitles the user to a single installation on either a Wayne or user owned computer.
When an employee/student leaves Wayne State University, they are no longer entitled to use Salford software purchased from the Software Clearinghouse. The software should be removed from the employee's/student's computer and destroyed or returned to the Software Clearinghouse.
Operating System Requirements
For more specific system requirements refer the Salford's web site at www.salford-systems.com. The minimum setup requirements compatible with most Salford products is as follows:
